Warning for GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado owners before you buy!!!

There are 2 problems with this product. The first problem is the way its shipped. The box and packing material are not enough to protect it from dents during shipping. My first shipment had small dents on both of the step bars. The second problem is with the install of this product. In order to install this product you must remove the body frame bolts. There are 3 on each side of the vehicle if you are installing these on a GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado. Do a google search regarding the removal of these bolts and you will see that there's a problem with mostly the center nut breaking it's weld. This can only be fixed at the dealership if this happens as the nut is inside the body and you cannot get to it. My passenger side center body mount nut broke it's weld and I was unable to remove the bolt. This is a well documented problem with late model GMC/Chevy trucks only. What ever you do, DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH!!! USE HAND TOOLS ONLY AND BE VERY CAREFUL IF YO U DO ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THESE. GM also uses LOCTITE on the bolts. You also should retorque the bolts to 74 pounds. I hope this information will help.

The product itself seems to be very well made and looks good on the truck. I wold give this product 5 stars if it wasn't for these 2 problems.

Westin Nerf Bars, a good addition for 2011 Silverado

The bars arrived in just a few days and the install was very straight forward, about an hour. A breaking bar or the like may prove helpful in removing the body bolts. I wish that Westin had included the torque settings for replacing the body bolts!!! A HUGE mistake on their part, in my opinion! Just try to find the correct settings somewhere. Multiple web searches have been less than successful. I'm going to have to make a trip to a Chevy dealer and hope they will tell me. If a product is specific for a certain model truck, why not include that critical information in the installation instructions? Bottom line, first attempt the truck squeeked with every take off, braking and turn. I retorqued to a lower setting, 60 ft-lbs with great improvement but I still have squeeks. Will try less torque SOON. I give Westin 5 of 5 for quality of material and good looks but 1 of 5 for not including the TORQUE settings. You can say installer error. Guess I am not smart enou gh to know the torque settings of every bolt on my truck.

Excellent Product that Looks Great

I own a 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab with the long box and I purchased the 4" Platinum Oval Step Bars by Westin (21-1950). I purchased these from [...] but wanted to review them here for everyone's benefit. They came with free shipping and I found a discount code online that brought the price down to about $280. They shipped very quickly and were at my house within a week of ordering them.

The bars came in a very long rectangle cardboard box. Each bar was individually wrapped in bubble wrap. They were separated and held in place in the box by styrofoam. All the installation parts came in a small cardboard box. The packaging was very nice and there was no way anything was getting scratched unless it was scratched at the factory before shipping.

The paper instructions are very generic and pretty terrible. The pictures are very small and in black and white so they were pretty much worthless. The ratchet sizes they said to use were also wrong. If you are going to give generic instructions for multiple vehicles, then at least put all the different tools you might need or don't put any at all. I was not at my house when I installed these so I didn't have access to all my tools, just my Craftsman 154 piece tool kit I keep in my truck. I am lucky it had ONE 13/16 socket for a 3/8" ratchet, and I also just happened to have a long extension that I threw in the tool kit. The instructions called for 16mm, 18mm, and 19mm sockets, but I did not even use the 18mm at all. All in all, the instructions were pretty much worthless but it was not hard to figure out.

Four of the six brackets came labeled DF and PF for driver and passenger front, DM and PM for the middle, but the rears were not labeled. I was able to figure it out judging by how the front and middle were positioned.

Installation is very simple, you just use a ratchet and take out the body mount bolt and stick the bracket in between the bolt and rubber bushing. Tighten a little bit so that the bolt bites, but leave wiggle room for the bracket. Attach the step up bar to the bracket and tighten each one so that the angles line up nicely.

These bars look awesome and are very functional. The wide step is a perfect size. My old 3" Bully step up bars for my Sierra 1500 Crew Cab were kind of small and my feet would slip off especially in winter. These large steps don't have that problem. Also my old Bully bars were too close to the bottom of my truck and there was really not any room to get a foot on the bar and step up in to the cab. These seem like the perfect height, not too low that I lose ground clearance but not too high.

Also these are not too big. I debated the 4" Oval bars becase I thought they might look tacky, but that is not the case at all.

These look great and I have gotten tons of compliments on them. These are the bars I will buy for the rest of my life for my trucks and recommend to all my family and friends.
