Item is well thought out, mfg's packaging is not...

The trunk does what it says and creates a small "secure" space. Its security is provided by the locking tailgate. On my 09, when you use the keyfob to lock the doors, the manual power lock button does not work so that is how security is provided when you are running without a top. With a soft-top on, the trunk does make it more difficult to just "flip up" the back runner, but, its still manageable. Getting to the built-in flip up lid is still easy too.

I said "secure", because as the previous reviewer stated, 2 of the 3 exterior bolts are exposed if the rear seat is moved forward. Thats a bit of a bummer. The good part is one of them will require a socket and the other is a torx screw. A determined thief will have tools and if given time, will be able to breach this trunk. Heck, a determined thief with time will be able to breach anything! But for the casual passer-by, it will hide any goodies you want to put in there.

I like it. And, even though the amazon "does this fit my car" drop down said it doesn't fit a 2009 jk, it does. I double checked at other sites and the mfgr's site and the model number matched, so, I ordered. Installed fairly easily, getting the torx screw to line up through the carpet was the biggest pain. You'll see! It took probably about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace.

The biggest downside was the mfgr's packaging (not amazons) was horrible. Its basically just in a box. No edge protection, etc. I had to run over the item with some black rustoleum paint because there were some beat-up edges and a scratch or 2 on the side. Whether this was due to the packaging or just poor finishing craftsmanship, I don't know. The box was sorta beat up. It was a little lame to have to paint it right out of the box though.

Eventually, I plan to just use some 3m tack spray and install some carpet over it that matches the jeep carpet. This way I'll be able to set things on top of the shelf and not worry about scratching.

Good product. I like it.

Oh, one more thing, I have a sub and at first was worried about the sound being hampered. I think it still sounds good for a small factory sub in a nearly enclosed metal box. It isn't really a thumper to start with.

Good item, good price

I purchased the version for use with the built-in subwoofer. Overall, this is going to accomplish what I wanted - fairly secure storage in the back of my Wrangler. My Instatrunk arrived with one of the screw tabs slightly bent back and required bending back into place. Seems like the issue could have been avoided with a piece of styrofoam in a strategic spot in the box. The Instatrunk will not stop a really determined thief, as the two screws for the top of the cover are in a location that can be unscrewed from outside the unit, if you first fold the seat down. I do like that there is a little bit of space between the unit and the back of the rear seat, plenty for a couple blankets for the folks riding in the back seat if the roof is folded down. The unit also affords access to the storage area under the rear carpet where the jack is - it cannot be opened quite to its full extent, but certainly enough to get at everything. The Instatrunk makes me a lot more confide nt being able to leave my tools and other stuff in the back of my Jeep, so I would definitely buy this again if I had a second Jeep.
