4Is A Connected to B or C?
By Furman O. Ashley
First off the product is great. The four stars comes from everything except the product. I have a 2006 Dodge RAM 1500 4X4 and want to start making it "my truck" so I looked through a lot of aftermarket tail lights but for the price I could not beat these Spyder old school replacements. Another major factor in my choice or Spyder option was for its unique "HALO" ring of LED lights around the park and brake lights. Since the Amazon page as well as the actual Spyder page both just say these are "Plug-N-Play" replacement lights, I was not worried about the lack of installation instructions with just basically unplug your old and plug in these new. Then while looking at them on the Spyder webpage I see an image of two sets of three loose wires, one set of three for each HALO LED ring. I figure, no problem there will be instructions in the box when I get them in the mail. Dramatic pause, the box arrives with a receipt... The lights use your factory bulbs in the factory "light b ar" which holds those three bulbs so that you just transfer those from the original housing and of course that means that the factory connection just gets plugged right back into the same light bar it's just on your new housing. Make sure you also transfer the three (3 on each housing) small orange rubber weather seals with the light bar from your original to the replacement housing so you don't get water in the housing the first time you're in rain. The two issues I have is one very minor, and one major pain. The minor is that when I received these and looked them over, I noticed that one of the new housings was missing one of the metal clips that act as your "nut" to secure the housing to the truck with the original screws so I had to take one off my factory housing but all ended well with this issue. The major PAIN was that as stated above, each housing has three loose wires for each HALO ring that are red, white and blue. First I assume that the blue is Spyder choice and the LED ring wiring is still set up in a standard manner where red is positive, blue (replacing black) is negative and white is the ground. But then why do I need to assume? Well it's because there was no instructions for this additional wiring which is much easier to mess up because you're not plugging in a factory plug, you have to know which color wire is used for what purpose and then use a light tester / multi-meter to identify the correct wires from your factory wiring that must also be used and then splice in these wires correctly to get your HALO rings to work without blowing fuses or other more dangerous results from improper wiring. Next fall back I go to the Spyder webpage because these days everybody has softcopy installation instructions and owner's manuals on their webpages. WRONG! A thorough search of Spyder resulted in no installation instructions to download. They do have an installation video linked to these tail lights and I thought FINALLY! But wait, I p lay the video and it is a video for an entirely different set of tail lights that do not have HALO rings so wiring is not even mentioned! Last ditch effort, contact Spyder for help. Wrong again! The only method for contacting TECH support is to use their "Contact Us" page to send them an email question (every phone number listed says "for wholesale inquiry only") and await a reply but they only operate M-F 8am to 5pm PST. So as of now, I've installed the lights and everything works fine except the HALO rings. I've taped and tucked those wires awaiting a response form Spyder. I'll update this review when (if) I get what I need from Spyder.

Update - 28 April 2012: Well I still say that Spyder has a good tail light but I can now confirm that there tech support is as bad as I thought. I sent my email request for clarification and got back a 2 line response that said they don't have any instructions but Red is for turn signal/brake, blue is brake, and white is negativ e. I hooked them and and they look great. I recommed this product if you already know what you're doing with the wiring connections.
